Which tablet should I choose?

There are many things to consider when choosing a tablet for a public facing application: price, operating system, device specs and screen size are just some of the considerations.

Apple : iOS : iPad
iPad can be a great choice for public facing tablet applications. Apple were first on the market with iPad and in many ways still remain the front runners, having built a reputation around robust devices that continue operating after many years. The fact that the software and the hardware are developed and maintained by the same company can lead to faster addressing of vulnerabilities and more secure software updates. Despite the relatively higher cost, with service and support that is second to none, many enterprises would not touch any other device or operating system.
For smaller installations, iOS’s built in feature “Guided Access” can be used to lock the tablet down into particular apps and limit what the end user can access (a typical example might be to lock the tablet down to one particular web page). For larger projects, managing large fleets of devices in the field can be made simple via third party Mobile Device Management (MDM) packages such as AirWatch.

Samsung : Android : Galaxy Tab
Samsung’s Galaxy Tab range running the Android operating system are increasingly being used by small, medium and large enterprises as public facing interactive kiosks or information screens. Etihad Stadium recently chose to deploy the flagship Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 as an HD interactive touch screen for their Medallion Club Smart Seat project. Recent innovations like Samsung Knox for remote device management are making Samsung tablets a genuine player in the enterprise tablet space.

Microsoft : Windows : Surface
Windows still remains the dominant player for desktop computing, and Windows tablets are an increasingly popular choice for many enterprise applications. Microsoft sit at a relatively high price point, but have excellent specs, so are considered by many to be good value for money. Surface models, unlike iPads and most Android devices, have external USB ports for simple plug and play functionality of external devices such as printers and scanner.
Choosing a Windows tablets can be a popular choice for IT departments, allowing for easier development of software for roll-out across both Desktop and Mobile devices.

Does Sprocket X fit every tablet?

Sprocket X is compatible with most leading tablet models used for enterprise applications, but our enclosures are not universal.

Due to dimensional differences and variations in screen location, power button location, home button location and front facing camera location, each Sprocket X enclosure is configured specifically for each tablet model.

Sprocket X’s modular design means we can often configure for different tablets simply by swapping out a handful of components. The flexibility of the Sprocket X system allows us to configure for virtually any tablet subject to minimum order quantities.

If we do not have a standard product that is suitable for your tablet, contact us with the tablet model in question and some details of your project. We’ll be happy to advise about building a custom enclosure solution for you.
