Which tablet should I choose?

There are many things to consider when choosing a tablet for a public facing application: price, operating system, device specs and screen size are just some of the considerations.

Apple : iOS : iPad
iPad can be a great choice for public facing tablet applications. Apple were first on the market with iPad and in many ways still remain the front runners, having built a reputation around robust devices that continue operating after many years. The fact that the software and the hardware are developed and maintained by the same company can lead to faster addressing of vulnerabilities and more secure software updates. Despite the relatively higher cost, with service and support that is second to none, many enterprises would not touch any other device or operating system.
For smaller installations, iOS’s built in feature “Guided Access” can be used to lock the tablet down into particular apps and limit what the end user can access (a typical example might be to lock the tablet down to one particular web page). For larger projects, managing large fleets of devices in the field can be made simple via third party Mobile Device Management (MDM) packages such as AirWatch.

We will be happy to offer advice based on our experience in the interactive technology space and can put you in touch with the right hardware and software partners to help make your iPad roll-out a smooth success.

Samsung : Android : Galaxy Tab
Samsung’s Galaxy Tab range running the Android operating system are increasingly being used by small, medium and large enterprises as public facing interactive kiosks or information screens. Etihad Stadium recently chose to deploy the flagship Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 as an HD interactive touch screen for their Medallion Club Smart Seat project. Recent innovations like Samsung Knox for remote device management are making Samsung tablets a genuine player in the enterprise tablet space.

We will be happy to offer advice and put you in touch with the right hardware and software partners to help make your tablet roll-out a success.

Microsoft : Windows : Surface
Windows still remains the dominant player for desktop computing, and Windows tablets are an increasingly popular choice for many enterprise applications. Microsoft sit at a relatively high price point, but have excellent specs, so are considered by many to be good value for money. Surface models, unlike iPads and most Android devices, have external USB ports for simple plug and play functionality of external devices such as printers and scanner.
Choosing a Windows tablets can be a popular choice for IT departments, allowing for easier development of software for roll-out across both Desktop and Mobile devices.

Does Sprocket X fit every tablet?

Sprocket X is compatible with most leading tablet models (including the iPad 9th & 10th Generations and the Tab A9+ 10.9 2023) used for enterprise applications, but our enclosures are not universal.

Due to dimensional differences and variations in screen location, power button location, home button location and front facing camera location, each Sprocket X enclosure is configured specifically for each tablet model.

Sprocket X’s modular design means we can often configure for different tablets simply by swapping out a handful of components. The flexibility of the Sprocket X system allows us to configure for virtually any tablet subject to minimum order quantities.

If we do not have a standard product that is suitable for your tablet, contact us with the tablet model in question and some details of your project. We’ll be happy to advise about building a custom enclosure solution for you.

How are Sprocket X tablet enclosures manufactured?

Sprocket X is manufactured from industrial grade aluminium with tough and durable ABS plastic trims. The secure case, stem, stem cap and rotate plate are aluminium, meaning we can offer Sprocket X in range of stunning anodised finishes. Trim components are available in black or white. The faceplate is composed of steel for strength with a matte black or matte white acrylic dress face for a smooth and elegant finish.

How secure are Sprocket X tablet enclosures?

Sprocket have been developing public access interactive systems for over a decade and as a result we have designed the Sprocket X cases and stands to work in these environments. Sprocket extensively tested Sprocket X during its development and is confident in its robust level of security. Although the Sprocket X mounts are vandal resistant we don’t recommend they be located in totally unsupervised locations.

How do I keep my tablet on charge?

Sprocket X is designed to allow the tablet to remain permanently on charge. You can pass the tablet charge cable through the stem and into the back of the enclosure, allowing for completely concealed cabling, with quick access to cabling available via Sprocket smart snap-fit cover. For best fitment of iPad and Android models, we include a flat charge cable with every Sprocket X enclosure. It can be threaded through the central post of any Sprocket X to a nearby AC outlet. Enclosures for Microsoft Surface are designed to allow the proprietary cable to pass through. Configure your Tablet power settings to stay on permanently and your customers can interact with Sprocket X all day.

Can I have different colours or branding?

Sprocket X comes in the classic anodised silver metallic with black or white trims and in the slick all black option. There are also many ways in which Sprocket X can be customized or branded. For maximum branding presence you can’t go past the X Display with full length graphic panels. An overhead sign panel, often used for a call to action or corporate branding, is available for X desk and X floor. X Floor also has a banner option available. The fascia of any Sprocket X enclosure can include a graphic, your logo, your message or custom colour. The enclosures and other components can be supplied in custom colours and finishes such as beautiful anodised colours or powder coated colours [subject to minimum order quantities]. If you need a specific case colour to coordinate with your corporate style, contact us to discuss your requirements.

What software do I need?

As a tablet solution you will need to run an application native to the operating system. Many of our clients simply lock the tablet down to a single web page or website. Alternatively, install your own app or download a suitable one from the wide choice available on iTunes or the Play Store. Many clients choose to install a secure browser that allows them to securely connect to their website.

How do I put my tablet into kiosk mode?

Depending on the tablet model, these days it is fairly straight forward to lock down your tablet to a particular web page, website or application, thereby giving you control over what the end user is able to do and access on the tablet. iPads have a built in feature called Guided Access which limits your device to a single app and lets you control which app features are available.
